  • Transport of oxygen / digested foods / hormones / antibodies from maternal blood to foetal blood/nutrients /glucose etc.
  • Elimination of nitrogenous wastes / carbon dioxide from foetal blood to maternal blood./urea, uric acid, creatinine
  • Secretes oestrogen and progesterone
  • Acts as a barrier to germs.
