Plant Physiology (10)

The diagram of an apparatus given below demonstrates a particular process in plants. Study the same and answer the questions that follow:

  1. Name the apparatus.
  2. Which phenomenon is demonstrated by this apparatus?
  3. Explain the phenomenon mentioned in (ii) above.
  4. State two limitations of using this apparatus.
  5. What is the importance of the air bubble in the experiment?
  6. Name the structures in a plant through which the above process takes place.

Answer

  1. Ganong’s Potometer
  2. Transpiration/ measures rate of uptake of water due to transpiration
  3. It is the loss of water as water vapour from the aerial parts of the plant.
  4. – Introducing the air bubble is difficult
    – Twig may not be alive for a long period
    – Changes in the outside temperature / light/ humidity affects the position of air bubble.
  5. Helps to calculate the rate of transpiration in a given time.
  6. Stomata, Lenticels, Cuticle
