Given below are two stages in the evolution of man. Study them and answer the questions that follow:

1. Identify Australopithecus and Neanderthal man from the above pictures.
2. Mention two characteristic features each for the two stages.
3. Who proposed the theory of ‘Natural Selection’?
4. Name the organism used as an example to explain ‘Industrial Melanism’.
5. Give two examples of Vestigial organs in humans.

(i) A - Neanderthal man, B - Australopithecus

(ii) A - absolute bipedalism, large head, broad, flat, sloping forehead, less hair on body, large cranial capacity 1,500 cm³

B - Protruding face, Chin absent, prominent eyebrow ridges, flat nose, projecting face, cranial capacity 450 - 600 cm³.

(iii) Charles Darwin

(iv) Peppered moth / Biston betularia
